My mother's maiden name, Granoff, is the Jewish (eastern Ashkenazic) alternative spelling of Granov, a habitational name fo5 Granov in Ukraine. In the U.S. this is also found as a reduced form of Granovsky, the local form of this surname in Ukraine.
This is my family tree, I was able to go as far back as my fourth great grandfather. The link to the full tree in detail is here.
My Family's Journey
My great-great-grandfather, Benjamin Benusha Granoff came to America circa 1895 with his family, My great-grandfather, Herbert (Chaim) Granoff, was the first of his six siblings to be born in America. At Ellis Island, their last name had been shortened from Granovsky, so he was also the first child to be born with their new Americanized name.
Our family in Russia was barely literate, but once in America, they wanted their children to get as much education as they could. The first generation got through high school, but the second American generation went to university, including masters and doctoral degrees. They believed that education (initially secular but then also coming to include formal Jewish education) was one of the most important things they could give their children.
According to Janice via Bibi - Ella Poloff and Benjamin Granoff arrived in Rotterdam, Netherland from Kamianka, traveling with Barney, Max, Rose, and Anna, as well as a cousin Pini Pisman from Balazar and Sam Dasheb - her husband's sister's son.
