In 1963, my Sabba and Savta and their parents moved from Morocco to Israel. Savta moved from Casablanca to Ashkelon. Sabba moved from Marrakech to Beer Sheva. It was very hard when they moved. It was hard to get a job, they did not know the language, and Israel did not place them in a good place. They were placed in Ma'abarot, a lousy tiny living arrangement.
My Sabba Nissim and Savta Miriam got married in 1970. They already new each other before they moved to Israel from Morocco.
They went to school called כיח, Kol Israel Chaverim. This is a school that the French created to promote modern education in Morocco. The teachers taught French, math, literature and a tiny bit of Hebrew.
My grandparents had a date farm in Tamnugalt. They would go there in the summer along with 200 other Jews. All of my family, including the children, would pick dates together. In the night, they would sleep together on the roof. My Sabba once fell off the roof.
Before Shavuot they would write the aleph bet with honey. They would then take all the children under five and have them lick it in a great celebration.
Every Thursday the Jewish community would slaughter a cow and they would split up the meat among each other because there was no refridgeration.
