Tab is a small village in Hungary in the county of Somogy. The village dates back to the early 1200's. Jews made up a large portion of the population before World War II. Tab had one of largest Jewish communities in Somogy County, which is also proven by the fact that one of the most prestigious synagogue of the county was built there in 1762. Tab stood on none of the important national or international trade routes, but the local authorities thought that the encouraging the settlement of the Jewish community could have a strong impact on the economic development of the town. It is close to the Danube River. Tab became a market town in the 1800s. According to the 1853 census of Somogy County the town had a population of 2,090 residents of which 973 were Hungarians, 625 Jews, 428 Slovaks and 64 Germans. Before World War II the number of Jews in the town was higher. Most of the Jewish people from the town were murdered in the Holocaust.
