The Jewish community developed shortly after Tetouan was rebuilt in the 15th century. The Jews lived in a separate area from the non-Jews called Juderia or Mellah and there rabbi was Rabbi Solomon Benzakin. In 1948 it became a bad economic situation and the French and Spanish tried to gain control over Morocco by demonstrating how different the Jews were from the Muslims so most Jews left.
