Town History
Shulem Oizer and Gella Braun migrated from a Romanian town called Sibiu. What used to be a major city, Sibiu is now known as a small town in Transylvania Romania. As a town, there never was a major Jewish population. Jews originally came to Sibiu in the 15th century, but were permanently settled there in 1848 after Hungarian restrictions on jews were abolished. Despite less restrictions against Jews, the population of jews in the town has never gone over 3% that it was in 1850. This was around the time my ancestor, Chaim Eliezer Gross, father of Gella Gross (who later became Gella Braun) came to Sibiu on an invitation to be the town's Rabbi and Shochet. Later, a census from the 1930’s tells us around 194,619 people lived there, and only 2.9% were Jewish. Today, the population of Jews in Sibiu is only 1.9%. Although they met in Sibiu, Shulom Oizer and Gella Braun emigrated from Sibiu to Israel in the 1950’s. |
