My grandmother was born in Vienna, the capitol of Austria. Vienna began as a Roman military camp, which grew into a settlement known as Vindobona, an important trade spot in the 11th century. It then became the capitol of the Babenberg, and later, the Hapsburg dynasties. During the 19th century, it became the capitol of the Austrian Empire, and then Austria-Hungary. Since the end of World War I, it has been the capitol of the Republic of Austria. During World War II, Vienna was annexed by the Nazis. Much of the city was destroyed by Allied bombing raids. It currently has an estimated population of 2 million, over a third of the entire country.
